Professor Kerryn Phelps AM

Integrative General Practitioner & Medical Director

Professor Kerryn Phelps is one of Australia’s best-known doctors and public health and human rights advocates. She has been a general practitioner for over thirty years and is the founder and principal clinician at Sydney Integrative Medicine and Cooper Street Clinic in Sydney, and is a pioneer in the fields of health communication and integrative medicine in Australia.

Prof Phelps is an adjunct Professor at Sydney Medical School and a Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales Medical Faculty. She is a conjoint Professor in the National Institute of Complementary Medicine at University of Western Sydney.

She has appeared in the media for over 30 years, bringing messages about healthy lifestyle to the attention of the public. Her television credits include the ABC’s EveryBody, TEN network’s Good Morning Australia, the Nine Network’s Today Show, A Current Affair, a documentary on the Kododa Campaign and was the narrator for the Seven Network’s Last Chance Surgery. She has been the subject of stories on 60 Minutes, Australian Story and This Is Your Life.

In 2000 Prof Phelps was elected as the first female President of the Australian Medical Association, a post she held for the maximum term of three years. She guided political and practical solutions to the medical indemnity crisis and the medical workforce shortage. Under her presidency, the AMA developed its first position statements on complementary medicine, on sexuality and gender diversity, on the medical response to bioterrorism, and on the association between climate change and human health. She advocated strongly for the rights of refugee children in detention and for a solution to the problems of health disparity and disadvantage for indigenous Australians.

She has been the popular health columnist for the Australian Women’s Weekly for twenty-four years and a regular health writer. She is a member of the New South Wales Ministerial Taskforce on Preventive Health and is a member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ Integrative Medicine Strategic Education Advisory Group.

Prof Phelps is also a member of the board of Hockey Australia and is a member of the Medical Advisory Panel of the International Hockey Federation.

From 2009-2012 she was President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association.

In 2003 she was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for services to Medicine and Australian society.

On 13 June 2011, she was awarded an Order of Australia for service to medicine, particularly through leadership roles with the Australian Medical Association, to education and community health, and as a general practitioner.

She is the author of a groundbreaking textbook, “General Practice: The Integrative Approach, published in 2010 by Elsevier.

In 2013 her book “Ultimate Wellness: The 3-Step Plan” was published by Pan Macmillan. Later that year she was invited to India to meet with HRH Prince Charles and to open the Global Health Futures Conference.

In 2014 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Western Sydney.

In 2015 she published her latest book “The Cancer Recovery Guide” with a foreword by HRH Prince Charles.

Dr Jonathan Bentley

General Practitioner

Dr Bentley moved from his birthplace of Melbourne to his now home of Sydney in 1987 at the request of his Sydney born and bred wife Sue who found Melbourne simply too cold and rainy.

A General Practitioner in Bondi for over 20 years, Dr Bentley jumped at the opportunity of joining the Sydney Integrative Medicine team in 2010 and the chance to build on his personal philosophy of combining high quality General Practice with Evidence Based Nutritional Medicine as part of a team of devoted and dedicated practitioners.

Dr Bentley has had many years of involvement with teaching and training of doctors at all levels from medical students at Sydney University to preseting at local doctors’s clinical meetings. He has been involved in General Practice Accreditation and helped practices all over Australia achieve their commitment to maintaining high professional standards. He is a regular contributor of interesting medical case studies to Medical Observer.

Dr Nora Abelev

Wholistic General Practitioner

Dr Nora Abelev is a wholistic general practitioner who is passionate about the application of evidence based medicine and complimentary therapy to patient care. She enjoys working as part of a team of professionals to maximise physical and mental wellbeing of the individual and their families.

Integrative General Practitioner

Dr Lucy Herron

Wholistic General Practitioner

Lucy is a General Practitioner who grew up in Sydney, gaining her medical qualifications at the University of New South Wales. After graduating, she spent several years working in the hospital system gaining experience across many specialties, in particular Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics.

In 2010 Lucy moved to Melbourne, where she completed her General Practice training. She worked for several years as a GP in Melbourne and she is delighted to be back in her home town now with her family.

Lucy is passionate about all aspects of General Practice and she loves the variety of issues that she encounters on a day-to-day basis. She has a particular interest in Paediatrics, Women’s Health, minor surgical procedures and preventative medicine.

Lucy is an advocate of the importance of the mind-body connection and the impact of mental wellbeing on physical health. To help achieve a positive balance Lucy believes in the efficacy of mindfulness meditation, a technique that she is trained in teaching. Mindfulness practice can help people to be more present in the moment and less vulnerable to stress and anxiety. This has been supported in numerous clinical trials and studies in recent years. She would be happy to share some mindfulness techniques with any patients who feel that this may assist them.

When not working, Lucy can be found practising yoga, spending time with family and friends, cooking and enjoying the outdoors.

Dr Albena Kausae

General Practitioner

Dr Albena Kausae is a GP who has been working in Australia since 1994. She is originally from Bulgaria where she graduated in Medicine in 1986 and went on to complete postgraduate studies in Neurophysiology in Kushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.

In 1993-94 she passed the Australian Medical Council Exams in Sydney and has been a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners ( RACGP ) since 2000.

Dr Anjali Didi was born and raised in London, UK where she attained her medical degree and went on to work in General Practice for nearly a decade. She has recently moved to Sydney with her husband and two young children to enjoy the sunnier part of the world.

Jaime Rose Chambers

APD & Nutritionist

Jaime Rose Chambers is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist. Jaime completed a Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Newcastle and is currently completing a Masters of Clinical Medicine for complementary therapies. Jaime has had a lifelong passion for food and cooking so when tossing up whether to become a chef or a Doctor, Jaime decided to combine the two and now as a Dietitian, treats her patient’s medical conditions with nutrition and lifestyle.

Jaime has a special interest in prostate and breast cancer and is strongly affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Centre at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Amanda Tanner

Acupuncturist

Amanda has undergone advanced training with some of the most prominent 5 Element Acupuncturists around the world including Niki Bilton, Nora Franglen, Ken Shiffrin and Professors J.R. and J.B.Worsley. She brings years of experience, a passion for personal development and a deep understanding of the spiritual and emotional side of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Amanda is a member of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association.

Amanda is also part of the teaching team that run seminars for TCM and Japanese trained acupuncturists in Australia and New Zealand.

In 1999 Amanda graduated from UTS with a Bachelor in Health Science in Acupuncture, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Amanda then travelled to China where she undertook an internship at the ‘Guanzhou Hospital of TCM No2’ and the ‘Wuzhou Hospital’. Here she spent time in the gynocology department, acupuncture ward and the department of internal medicine where orthodox medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine were practiced and integrated. Returning to Australia, Amanda enrolled in and completed a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2002. She also completed an Associate Diploma in health Science, massage therapy at Southern Sydney Institute.

Amanda spent five years working as part of the Physiotherapy/Rehabilitation team at Cook & Phillip Park. Here she practiced acupuncture and remedial massage to treat and manage common musculoskeletal conditions such as whiplash, backpain, sciata, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and recovery from surgery related to sport’s injury. Amanda also had her own acupuncture and massage clinic in Bundeena, Southern Sydney, where she lived for several years.

In 2006 Amanda joined the Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre, a fertility clinic specialising in gynecology, male and female sub fertility, miscarriage prevention and support during IVF pregnancy. Most common presentations include: polycystic ovary syndrome, painful irregular or absent periods, fibroids, nausea and fatigue in early pregnancy, digestive imbalances, anxiety / stress and turning of breach babies. Amanda has undertaken post graduate training in the area of addictions, cancer support and emotional intelligence. She has also worked with and been influenced by other modalities including osteopathy and nutrition.

In 2005 Amanda undertook a private mentoring and attended several seminars run by Gye Bennetts, a 5-element acupuncturist from the UK. As of 2007 Amanda has joined Gye Bennetts in teaching 5 element seminars to TCM acupuncturists in Sydney and Brisbane.

Amanda now practices at Uclinic where she works closely with the GPs and other practitioners to offer the very best in patient care.

Danielle Maloney (nee McEvoy)

Danielle is a warm and enthusiastic psychologist who is passionate about working collaboratively with people to help them make positive changes in their lives. Danielle loves working with people in all their complexity and is committed to finding unique evidence-based solutions to improve their psychological wellbeing.

Danielle has acquired experience treating a wide range of mental health issues across a broad spectrum of age groups in a variety of settings which include both public and private health sectors. Danielle’s specialist areas of interest include eating and body image disorders, perfectionism, difficulties with emotion regulation, trauma, depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety, social, panic and obsessive-compulsive), interpersonal issues and relationship problems, stress management and addictions.

Danielle does not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all model of intervention and she uses an integrative approach mostly comprised of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brain-Based Therapy, Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

Danielle does not provide neuropsychological assessment however has appropriate providers who she feels comfortable referring to. Similarly, Danielle works with patients above the age of 12 and does not treat children however she maintains an appropriate referral base if necessary.
